Ontario, Canada Gift Basket Ideas

June 22nd, 2008 by hrdataduffney

By Wendy Wood As you venture into the east-central part of Canada, you will encounter the province of Ontario, which offers one of the largest populations in the country. Contributing a bridge to other parts of the country, as well as to the United States, Ontario is surrounded by Manitoba, Quebec, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota. When it comes to admiring one of the most defined characteristics of the province, there is no denying its natural borders. Providing a gateway to four Great Lakes (Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario), the province is also known as the only location of its kind in Canada to border these majestic waters. When presenting the ins and outs of Ontario within a gift basket setting, you might want to utilize one of the most popular destinations in the province. The largest city in Canada is Toronto, which happens to be the capital of Ontario. It is throughout this area that numerous associations are made, including the delight of delicious Canadian maple syrup. A gift basket highlighting this tasty breakfast companion is just the thing to make pancakes, French toast, and waffles sing in the morning. Additional maple syrup products to consider include maple syrup toffee, maple sugar, maple spread, syrup jugs, maple-flavored drops and lollipops, and maple syrup in a bottle shaped like the leaf. In the arena of Canadian industry, Ontario contributes through manufacturing, forestry, mining, and agriculture. To celebrate the economy, a gift basket bearing fruit, vegetable, flower, and plant seeds could present the ideal hobby for the newly retired. To explore the great outdoors in Ontario, tourists and residents embrace the fresh water recreation and breathtaking wilderness stretched across the land. The year provides the perfect scene for hunting, skiing, and snowmobiling adventures. For those who crave the cold, why not offer a gift basket that quickly warms the body and soul after a long day snowshoeing in the woods or taking the kids to the “bunny” slopes? A hot chocolate gift basket with all of the fixings is the ideal gesture when filled with marshmallows, decorative mugs, chocolate syrup, cocoa packets, stir sticks, spoons, and flavored creamers. The winters in Ontario can be pretty harsh. For example, in Toronto, the temperature has been known to fall below freezing between the late part of November and into March. In January and February, the weather can be quite unbearable for some. For the snowbound adventurer who returns home with a cold, a gift basket filled with soothing remedies makes a great gift. Chicken noodle soup packets, a mug, assorted cough drops, maple drops, tissues, sore throat spray, herbal tea, and menthol rub creates a gift basket that truly serves a purpose. In Ontario, hockey is a celebrated sport with two teams defending the ice during the season: Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators. The province is also home to the OHL (Ontario Hockey League). It is here that some of the best players are drafted into the NHL without a blink of the eye. A gift basket business will certainly see a boost in hockey-related arrangements throughout the season, especially if the teams are heading for a championship streak. Skin Rejuvenation of The Future

June 19th, 2008 by hrdataduffney

By Lance Winslow Did you know that the average person has nearly 5 pounds of dead skin on them at any one time? Want to lose weight? Why not get a body wrap and full body massage? Simple enough. Only one problem that takes a lot of time and afterwards it is hard to get motivated to do much of anything. Such a life of Bliss, yet the reality is that few of us really have the time to self indulge between all our family obligations, work and scheduled events to attend. But what if you could lose that five pounds of dead skin and look a little thinner and be a little lighter too. Think of it; Lose 5 pounds in three minutes. How so you ask? Now you are interested in this device, which will be available in the modern bathroom. Indeed it will use high speed electron charged particles, in an air blower system, which will rapidly flow across your body connecting with and removing dead skin as the air re-circulates thru the unit on which you will stand on, about the size of a scale. Simply close your eyes and then wait for the static charge to build up and turn on the blower. The flow will come from above your head facing your feet and the air will flow over your body to the floor vacuum unit. The dead skin will all be collected in the membranes inside which are coated with anti-bacteria material. Then turn it off, take your shower and you will be completed. 6 Steps to Beginner Fat Loss

June 15th, 2008 by hrdataduffney

By Craig Ballantyne The 6 Steps to Fitness Success for Beginners: Part I Two of the more dreaded post-holiday tasks are assembling new electronics and planning your New Years resolution workouts especially when you have no instruction booklet for the latter. For beginners, getting into fitness can be intimidating and confusing. But it doesnt have to be that way. In fact, getting fit is one of the most straightforward tasks youll attempt in the New Year. Fortunately, reaching your fitness goals requires only two things; discipline (thats up to you) and a set of simple guidelines (which Im happy to provide). First, you should arrange for a full physical examination from your physician. This is mandatory for people that have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or are obese. Once you have your doctors approval to begin a fitness program, you should schedule a fitness assessment with a health professional at your gym. While both of these are incredibly annoying, they are essential to your success and well-being. The benefits of a doctors visit are obvious, particularly if you have one or more of the previously mentioned conditions but it also allows you and your doctor to discuss your lifestyle. Preventative medicine is far better than reactive medicine. Make your doctor part of your fat loss and health-building team along with the health professionals at your gym. The real benefits of the fitness assessment arent finding out how much body fat you have or how many minutes you can last on the treadmill, but rather getting a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. According to Tim Irvine, President of Totum Life Science, First and foremost we need to identify what works and does not work mechanically for an individual. We do this from an injury prevention standpoint and also to determine what the limitations are for an individual. Much more appropriate programs can be set from this information. If you want to avoid injury and actually achieve your goals this year, get to know your strengths and weaknesses. The next secret is to walk, dont run, to fitness success. If you want to pick up your University running workouts where you left them 10 years ago, thats fine. But I guarantee you wont last 10 days. And then itll be a dreary 355 days until youre ready to try exercise again. The hidden benefit of a good fitness assessment is that it will actually serve as a nice introductory workout to your return to fitness. It will buffer your delusions of fitness grandeur from the reality of what your body actually can do. After the fitness assessment teaches your body a lesson and awakens your muscles from their winter slumber, only then will you realize your limits that you must respect in subsequent workouts. Goal-setting is the fourth secret to success (and not just in fitness, but in any area of life). It is much more effective to commit to a set of specific short-term and long-term goals than it is to routinely hope for weight loss each year. Set realistic goals and remember to train within your limits. If you are currently sedentary and havent exercised in months (or years), dont begin an advanced training program. Start with a conservative beginner program. Your belly wasnt built in a day, and neither will be lost overnight. Limit your initial workouts to 1 set per muscle group. In week 2, you should be ready to add another set. And if you want to build up to 3 sets, then do so in week 3. Slowly increase the weight and stay within your desired repetition range. At no time should you be too sore to function. And runners should also heed this advice. Too much running will guarantee shin splints in the early going. Avoid running on back to back days for the first two weeks and keep the distance short. Sore muscles are guaranteed when you lift. So keep the volume low. And now for the two super secrets that will help keep you committed and consistent with your workouts and will finally help you lose fat for good. First, build your social support team. Social support is the #1 factor for success for women in fitness programs, and is important for men as well. Support can come from your spouse, brother or sister, child, mom or dad, friend, neighbor, co-worker, personal trainer, or lifestyle coach. Dont try to go it alone. As Dr. Eric Serrano says about his weight loss patients, “Patients respond better when they report to a person instead of a machine. No one wants to disappoint a real person.” You also need to know that nutrition is the second most important factor for success in fat loss programs. Thats why you dont need to train like a world-class athlete when you are starting to lose fat. Most of the fat youll lose in the early going is because you have chosen to make better nutritional choices. And if you dont make better nutritional choices, even the best exercise program in the world isnt going to help you achieve your fat loss goals. Nutrition is a lot simpler than you think. Don’t over think things. See a nutritionist or listen to what your mother told you as a kid. Food choices should contain a large nutrient-to-calorie ratio. Dr. Phil (yes that Dr. Phil) calls this High-Response Cost, High-Yield Nutrition. And follow this rule: Don’t eat foods with added sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, or fruit syrup, says Elizabeth Ward, MS, RD. Log your nutritional intake on www.Fitday.com. This is a free website that allows you to track your calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fat. The consistent use of these 6 secrets will help you achieve your New Years resolutions. Make this years fitness plan a strategic investment in your future health. June 7th, 2008 by hrdataduffney

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jennifer_Lopaz]Jennifer Lopaz If you are looking forward to save money while buying mobile phones and service plans, buy from a dealer and not through the service provider directly. This is because dealers compete against each other with lower prices than the actual mobile service providers do. Dealers usually offer almost every existing mobile providers services so there is a convenience of one stop shopping. Online dealers are the most convenient source of shopping and comparing plans as you can save more and get low priced plans. If you have friends with a varied set of mobile providers, try each one to determine which one is the most reliable for you. Also take your friends feedback as they will be helpful on subjects of billing, quality of service and other important consumer information. Compare various deals available and get the most from your money by comparing various options for your mobile phone plans. Choose a handset that has the features you need. If you want a mobile phone only for making and receiving calls, then dont pay extra for a phone that has a camera and MP3 player. If you already have a phone and you are satisfied with it, dont buy a new one. Choose the service plan that suits your calling needs. Instead of opting for a plan having low monthly rates combined with a high per-call rate and no special features, opt for a contract that combines a reasonable monthly rate and low per call rates. So if you are wondering how to save money while shopping for your mobile phone then follow these simple tips and enjoy the convenience of mobile phone without burdening yourself with unnecessary expenditures. Bird Persuasion: How to Entice Them Over To Your Backyard or Garden

June 1st, 2008 by hrdataduffney

By Steve Bailey Most people remember an instance in which they’ve looked out the window in a spontaneous moment and caught a glimpse of an uncommonly attractive bird landing on a rose, or a tree branch. An especially surprising chance witnessing of a rare bird can lead us to an internal motivation of our own, of how to develop ideas to draw them to our home on a more regular basis. The variety of simple and possibly fun actions to attract birds range from simply hanging a running hose, set on “mist” (for attracting hummingbirds), to planting a specific type of flower or rose in your garden. You might be the type of home-owner that prefers attractive feeders or water-filled basins, or all of the above. The possibilities vary with the type of birds you wish to attract to your yard. Water Is a Good Start Water is not just for quenching their thirst. Birds do take a bath once in a while, so you can possibly mix up a combination of baths and water basins. They will not bathe, however, in a bird pool or basin that has more than about two inches of water, as they naturally fear drowning. When it comes to deep water, they will only perch on the side and drink from it. It’s a reversal from what we are used to as humans. Provide them with an appropriate bath tub, by creating a shallow container of water. Many birds, especially hummingbirds love to play in all light-running water. For example, set up a sprinkler or dangle a hose from a tree branch with the nozzle set on mist. Hummingbirds, among others, enjoy flying through this artificial rain. Nature created birds with a natural attraction to certain sounds, and this includes that of running water. Add a small fountain or create a simple waterfall. Birds can’t resist the sound of gently burbling, splashing or tinkling water. Feed Them Fruit or Seeds Birds such as robins, cedar waxwings, and Orioles will gladly help themselves to blackberries, raspberries, blue-berries, Juneberries and mulberries provided in a birdscape. Begin the process by growing perennial berry-bearing vines. Attract Orioles, also, with chunks of orange, apples, and bananas. Secure large pieces to tree trunks or feeding platforms so the birds can’t carry them away. Draw northern cardinals, blue jays and tufted titmice to your yard with hanging hoppers filled with black oil sunflower seeds. Tube feeders, especially those that are thistle-filled, excel in enticing American goldfinch. Whole sunflower seed heads are a natural way to help the birds make it through the winter. Fill the empty seed heads with peanut butter for continued nourishment. For those interested in growing sunflowers for bird feed, I recommend the Mammoth, Paul Bunyan Hybrid and Aztec Gold varieties. Pleasing bird appetites comes easy by allowing black-eyed Susan, aster, marigold, coreopsis, purple coneflow and zinnia to set seeds. Leave these seed heads standing through winter. A Bird’s Nesting Anemities Lure gray catbird and brown thrasher by planting barberry, hawthorne, lilac, mock orange and other thorny, twiggy shrubs where they are likely to make their homes. Accommodate purple-martins and other insect-eating birds by providing specially designed “apartment style” houses situated 12 to 20 feet high on telescoping poles. Erect birdhouses for bluebirds, chickadees and other cavity-seeking birds who normally nest in tree holes. Take note that specific birds perfer specific birdhouse dimensions. Preserve a standing dead tree trunk (that is not a threat to safety) as a nesting site for black-capped chickadees and an insect source for woodpeckers. Position nesting shelves — these are birdhouses without sides or front — in vine-covered arbors to meet the open nesting needs of American robins and song sparrows, who will build their nests in these open boxes. Additional Notes Choose a feeder that will allow the oddest shape seed to flow through smoothly. Upon refilling the feeder, make sure to clean out any old seed to avoid bacteria and rot. Clean the feeder thoroughly two or three times a year and keep your feeders full throughout the year. It’s a common misperception that just because spring and summer arrives, the birds couldn’t necessarily use some help; after all, this is a time when eggs are being laid and young are hatching. The additional nutrition added by the food in your feeder will also encourage the mothers to bring their young for a treat when they learn to fly. Birdbaths, garden fountains and ponds: Whichever you choose, these areas too, need to be kept clean and refreshed often, to prevent disease and thus keep that invitation open to birds. Place your feeders and birdbaths in an area that is easily accessible by you and not by predators such as larger birds and cats. Maximize your enjoyment of your new visitors by situating feeders in key places where you can view the birds - on your deck, or where you can view them from inside your room. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Steve Bailey is a webmaster and computer programmer who prefers the outdoor environment for spending time on his passion. Kids Bedding for Boys and Girls

May 29th, 2008 by hrdataduffney

By Avid Amiri There are many different types of kids bedding that is gender neutral, from everything such as a color scheme to characters, to animal themes. At the same time, though, there are many that are very gender specific. Girls have many different choices for what types of kids bedding they may want. A good theme for girls that can start at an early age is princesses, and girls will usually like this one for a long time. The same goes with flowers and pastel or pinks and purples. Boys have the equivalent in sports themes and things like camouflage. In this area, it can be one specific sport, such as football, or a more generalized theme that involves all sports. This works well, because they may change their minds on their favorite sport within a matter of months, or even weeks, and feel very adamantly about their favorite sport. Colors tend to be darker and brighter most of the time in boys rooms, so it is usually the same, or similar, when it comes to the kids bedding choices for them. The many gender neutral types can be such things as cartoon themes, certain animals, etc. especially when they are younger, as in babies or toddlers, it can be a lot easier to find gender neutral themes as opposed to gender specific. One of the reasons for this is that small children tend to not care quite as much about colors being a certain way and care more about characters or animals, and these all tend to be the same. This is especially true with nurseries, because so many times a person doesnt find out what the sex of the baby will be before its born, or they do, but the sonogram is wrong, or they are concerned with it possibly being wrong. Many parents tend to go with neutral bedding so that they wont have to worry about this if it happens to them. Luckily, with babies, no one cares that a little boys room is done in light greens and yellows, but when they get older their friends might tend to make fun of them if this were still the case. Girls have an option that boys dont have as they get older, and this is to have a canopy bed, with the curtains hanging on the rods above. For a girl, this would seem like they have the bed of a princess, but for a boy, they would feel like they were a girl in a bed like this. There are daybeds, as well, which are typically not a boys favorite type of bed. There are many different types of toddler beds as well, such as racecar beds, and for girls there are princess beds and more. Toddler beds are always made slightly differently than regular beds, so you will want to make sure the kids bedding is specifically made for that type of bed, as well as pick bedding to match it. There are bunk beds of many different types that a child may have, as well. This includes the kind with a twin bed on bottom, or it could be a full size, or even a futon. Each of these bed options leads to more options in bedding for them, because there are different types of sheets, and other bedding items that are specifically made for most types of bunk beds, so that they fit better than a regular sheet would. So, there are many things about boy kids bedding that is similar to girl kids bedding, but there are also many differences, and these are always a good thing to keep in mind when purchasing bedding for a child. If We are So Good as Practitioners, Why Are We So Bad at Delivering?

May 26th, 2008 by hrdataduffney

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Philip_Christie] Philip Christie Dental practice in Ireland is of the highest standards in the world. That is also true of our medical practice. Our teachers at our hospitals are, in many ways, quite extraordinary. They have strong academic backgrounds and training, and are committed genuine and passionate people. These people are given the job of training undergraduate and graduate students to the highest possible standards of knowledge and practice and that is what they give their all to accomplish. When students qualify they are committed first class graduates for the most part. This is all great news. So where is the problem? The ideal versus the real world Many medical and dental graduates will tell you about the culture shock that they experience when they come out into what is called the real world. We have been trained to provide the Gold Standard in treatment but suddenly we are expected to do our work under pressure. The cruel task-master going by the name economics but better known simply as money comes in to take control all of our activities and this is where our problems really begin. The exacting and exhaustive precision with which we were trained to provide excellence of service comes into clear and sharp conflict with the constraints of money and the other well known lord of economics time. These omnipotent dictators are of course related to each other. How often is the dictum proclaimed, sometimes with a sigh, sometimes triumphantly, sometimes almost reverently, but always with faith and conviction. Time Is Money we are assured. Is this the same job I learned in the hospital? To give you all some idea of the size of this culture shock that I refer to, consider this. A job which would take up to two hours as a student under supervision is now afforded maybe 15 - 20 minutes. This is a speed up factor of 4-6 times the taught rate in the Teaching Clinic. This jump in speed is expected to be accomplished immediately and is experienced as real pressure by the new graduate. Yet in this real world it is Time and Money which must have pride of place. We must now speed up so that we can be acceptable in the market place in terms of how long the job takes and how much the job costs. We are still expected to produce the Gold Standard which we were trained to provide in the hospital situation, yet the conditions in which these standards were obtained are now drastically different. The pressure has begun. Government and politicians will safeguard the sanctity of the healing arts? As if all that was not bad enough, we now allow/decide that authority in healthcare is the business of politicians and government. They become the paymasters and who pays the piper calls the tune. Suddenly, what we do and how we do it is being evaluated by people who know nothing of the burden of duty and responsibility that comes with the allegiance to Hippocrates. Next comes our dealing with Government Departments. Remember that I am not talking about the people in these departments. They are merely trying to do the job that they were asked to do. I am talking about the systems. So the Department is going to provide Treatment for workers but it has limited resources. So it negotiates a deal to have work done by dentists/doctors at reduced cost. This is not a real negotiation because dentists are made to feel that unless they give in, they will lose their livelihood. So they agree to reduced fees. Now the pressure intensifies because the required standard remains the same but the time allowed to achieve it is reduced. All decisions have consequences? Needless to say the increasing strain puts pressure on all the components of the system. The practitioner is under pressure in many ways. The cost of being in practice, wages, insurances, rents, rates, materials, laboratory are high to begin with. These increase year on year but the pressure is always intense to keep fees down. The first pressure is self-induced. This stems from the perception that people will not come to the practice if the prices are too high and so fear of the loss of business rules. State funded schemes are always at very reduced fees and so are a burden to the practice anyway. The solution to the problem is to either increase fees (and the fear of loss that comes with this is very strong) or do more work. Doing more work will involve either longer hours or working faster to get more done. Maybe it will involve a bit of both. Look in honesty and without defensiveness. There are many consequences to the decision which many have to work longer and/or faster. The study of these consequences reveals the very origins of the hazards that have come to be associated with modern general practice. While I can appreciate that it may be difficult to look upon these truths, surely it must be good news to find the origin of the problem. For only in identifying the cause of a problem can a solution becomes possible. The alternative is to continue with the same methods which are bringing as much pain and suffering to the practitioners as they are to the people that they purport to serve. How ironic and indeed unbelievable that we have not noticed that our healthcare system as it is currently constructed is causing the sickness and pain that it was set up to eliminate? Is this really what we want? As we look honestly at our methods and the results they bring, how can we say that we are satisfied that we are going in the right direction. As we analyse the consequences of how we operate our systems and see how one things leads to another, it must become obvious that the most radical change is needed. When will we bring some light to the hell that we have created and continue mindlessly and blindly to support? We like to think of ourselves as scientists but since what we do and continue to do is totally illogical we cannot apply the term meaningfully. Science must be logical to be itself and a lack of logic is a lack of science. To continue to use something which brings the opposite of what it was designed for, speaks volumes about the blindness that operates in healthcare. What hope could there be in asking blindness for direction? What can we deliver from blindness but chaos and confusion. My name is Philip Christie. I qualified as a Dental Surgeon at Trinity College, Dublin (Ireland) in 1980 and completed a Masters Programme in Dental Science, again at Trinity College Dublin, by research in 1995. I have been working full time in dental care either in general practice or specialist practice since qualification. My main interest is and always has been prevention. My real qualification is 23 years experience in dealing with real people and their problems face to face, as a clinical practitioner. I am the author of Something To Chew On: A Mouth Map To Health. It is a Health Manual with a difference. Different because it is designed for the future and for success. It is different because it gives the power back where it belongs, to the persons own self. Different because it prevents problems at source and saves on treatment and cost! How to Prepare Your Lawn for Fall

May 17th, 2008 by hrdataduffney

By Matt Morrison Hemingway once said, “America is the land of wide lawns and narrow minds.” Now, I don’t know about narrow minds, but we definitely love our lawns. Fall is one of the most important times of the year to perform lawn care maintenance. The process you need to follow will vary with the type of turf on your lawn. The two main types of turf grasses are cool season and warm season. The main difference is that cool season grasses require regular maintenance throughout the fall and winter seasons, while warm season grasses need to be prepped for the following spring. Common cool season grasses are ryegrasses, fescues, bluegrasses, and bentgrasses. Common warm season grasses include St. Augustinegrass, Bermudagrass, Zoysiagrass, and Buffalograss. If you are unsure what type you have on your lawn, you can take a sample to your local county extension and find out which type you have. The most important thing to remember is that maintenance doesn’t end when the grass stops growing. The process of fall lawn care consists of the following steps: Test Your Soil Apply Herbicides for Weed Control Water Fertilize Mow Seed or Sod Remove Leaves and Thatch Maintain Equipment Test Your Soil The first thing you should do this season is perform a soil test to determine levels of nutrients, pH and other factors that affect the growth of your lawn. These results will help you understand what your soil needs this fall. If you need to reduce the acidity in your soil, you should apply lime. If alkalinity should be reduced, then you should apply sulfur. The Cooperative Extension Service of state universities will usually perform a soil test for a reasonable fee. You can contact them or a local service to determine how you should collect samples and where to send them. Apply Herbicides for Weed Control Many broadleaf weeds start to show their ugly faces in the fall. Dandelions, plantain, clover and creeping charlie are just some of the perennial weeds that come out to play. If the weeds are spread out and few in number, you can spot treat them with an herbicide. Spray container products make it easy to do spot treatments. You should complete this task while temperatures are still above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you carefully evaluate the number and types of weeds in your lawn. It is not necessary to apply herbicides over your entire lawn unless there is significant infestation. Don’t worry about crabgrass and other annual weed-like grasses. These are controlled more effectively in the spring. Water Even though temperatures are cooler and the growth of your grass is slowing down, the lawn still needs to be watered. This is often one of the most neglected areas of fall lawn care. Visions of cool fall and winter weather often cause lawn owners to take a vacation and forget about their lawns. But, you should continue to water until the ground is cold and freezing temperatures are on the horizon. If you have an automatic sprinkler system, you will need to use compressed air to blow out the pipes and sprinkler heads before damage occurs from a freeze. Fertilize If you are a lawn fanatic like me, you can make two applications of fertilizer, once now and another in the late stages of fall (late October/ early November). This will provide nutrients to your lawn over a longer growth period. Late season fertilizing often causes lawns to be the first to grow in the spring. However, the longer you wait to fertilize, the less likely it is to be beneficial. When in doubt, simply skip the final application. If your soil test indicates that your lawn has a shortage of phosphorus, then you may consider using a ‘winterizing’ type of fertilizer. Otherwise, leftover spring fertilizer or a weed and feed fertilizer is sufficient. One final thing to avoid is slow-release fertilizers. During this time of year, soil has a lower level of microbial activity which means it takes longer to break down fertilizer and make its nutrients available to the grass. Mow You should continue to mow your lawn throughout the fall until growth stops. It is important to keep your grass 2″ to 2 - 1/2″ tall during fall. If your grass gets too long, it will mat and risk lawn diseases like snow mold. However, if you cut it too short (less than 2″), you can diminish the lawn’s ability to make and store food for growth in the spring. Seed or Sod This is not always a necessary lawn care practice, but this time of year is the best time to establish or repair a lawn by seeding or sodding. Seeding and sodding should be completed as soon as possible before really cold weather sets in. If you are overseeding your lawn, you need to rake up debris and dethatch your lawn if thatch is thicker than half an inch. This ensures that the grass seed will be as close to the soil as possible. You should also aim to keep the soil moist for a few weeks while the seeds are germinating. Remove Leaves and Thatch When leaves begin to fall in autumn, it is important to remove them before a thick layer forms that can smother the grass. Simply raking often removes thatch from your lawn, but in bad cases of soil compaction, you may need to get a lawn aerator to perform core aeration. If you have the funds, and you’re serious about lawn care, you may want to buy an aerator. Otherwise, you can simply rent one at a local hardware or garden supply store. Maintain Equipment Lawn care equipment requires constant maintenance throughout, but the fall season involves a more thorough maintenance process. Upkeep can save you tons of money and heartache in the long run. Fall is a great time to perform an oil change on your mower. You should also drain the gas from your mower or add a gas stabilizer. Consult your manual before using a stabilizer, because it may void your warranty. Remove the mower’s spark plug with a spark-plug wrench. Lubricate the spark-plug cylinder with a teaspoon of oil through its hole. Install a new spark plug, but keep the spark-plug wire disconnected. Grease where necessary, especially the rear height-adjuster on a self-propelled mower. You should check your blade and the bolts on the unit to ensure tightness. You should also inspect and possibly sharpen your mower blade. After you have completed these steps, store the mower in a clean, dry place away from any possible ignition sources. Establishing Questionnaire Flow & Layout

May 9th, 2008 by hrdataduffney

By Michael Russell Experienced marketing researchers are well aware that questionnaire development is the key to obtaining interviewer-interviewee rapport. The greater the rapport, the more likely the interviewer will obtain a completed interview. Also, the respondent’s answers will probably be more carefully thought out and detailed. Researcher wisdom has developed the following general guidelines concerning questionnaire flow. Use the screener questions to identify qualified respondents. Most data acquisition processes today employ some variation of quota sampling. Only qualified respondents are interviewed and specific minimum numbers (quotas) of various types of qualified respondents may be desired. A study on food for instance, generally has quotas of users of specific brands, a magazine study screens for readers, a cosmetic study screens for brand awareness and so forth. Screeners are questions designed to identify appropriate respondents. Screeners may be on the questionnaire or, in many cases, a screening questionnaire is provided. In this instance, a screener is filled out for everyone interviewed. Thus, any demographics obtained provide a basis for comparison against people who qualify for a full study. A long screener can significantly increase the cost of the data acquisition process, since interviewers are gathering more information from each respondent. Short screeners quickly eliminate unqualified people and eliminate unqualified people and enable the interviewer to move immediately to the next potential respondent. Most important, screeners provide a basis for estimating the costs of a survey. After obtaining a qualified respondent, begin with a question that sparks a respondent’s interest. After introductory comments and screens to find a qualified respondent, the initial questions should be simple, interesting and non-threatening. To open a questionnaire with an income or age question might be disastrous. These are considered threatening and immediately put the respondent on the defensive. Ask general questions first. Once the interviewer proceeds beyond the opening warm-up questions, the questionnaire should proceed in a logical fashion. General questions are covered first to get the person thinking about a concept, company, or type of product and then to the specifics. For example, a data acquisition questionnaire on shampoo might begin with “Have you purchased a hair spray, hair conditioner, or hair shampoo within the past six weeks?” Then it would ask about the frequency of shampooing, brands purchased in the last three months, satisfaction and dissatisfaction with brands purchased, repurchase intent, characteristics of an “ideal” shampoo, respondent’s hair characteristics and finally demographics. Ask questions that require work in the middle of the data acquisition questionnaire. Initially, the respondent is only vaguely interested and understanding of the nature of the survey. As the interest-building questions transpire, the interview process builds momentum and commitment to the interview. The interest, commitment and rapport built up sustain the respondent in this part of the interview. Even if the self-administered method is used (do it yourself data acquisition questionnaire), the approach is the same: build interest and commitment early to motivate the respondent to finish the rest of the survey. Insert prompters and strategic points. Good interviewers can sense when a respondent’s interest and motivation sag and will attempt to build them back up. However, it is always worthwhile for the questionnaire designer to insert short encouragements at strategic locations in the questionnaire. These may be simple statements such as, “I only have a few more questions to go”, or “This next section will be easier”. They may also be inserted to introduce a new section or line of questioning. Position sensitive, threatening questions and demographic questions at the end. As mentioned earlier, occasions sometimes arise when the objectives of the data acquisition process necessitate questions on topics about which respondents may feel uneasy. Embarrassing topics should be covered near the end of the questionnaire. Placing these questions at the end will ensure that most questions are answered before the respondent becomes defensive and breaks off the interview. Moreover, rapport has been established by this time, increasing the likelihood of a completed questionnaire.
